I have long felt that The Ghost Wore Grey may be the best book I ever wrote. At the very least, I think it has the best ending I ever managed.

The Quackadoodle Inn, the setting for most of the story, was inspired by two different inns. One, which I actually stayed in, gave me the physical setting. The other I only read about, but it gave me the inspiration for the plot. (I am not going to tell you what it was, because I don’t want to give away any of the surprises.)
